To make it easier, I’ve put together my top 10 things to do in Porto that will give you a true taste of the city. If you’ve already done Porto, or are there for more than a few days, you might also want to check out my articles on the hidden gems of Porto.

Ribeira District

Stroll through Porto’s historic waterfront, the Ribeira District, where narrow cobblestone streets wind between colorful, centuries-old houses. Riverside cafes and restaurants line the Douro River, offering the perfect spot to sip a coffee or enjoy traditional Portuguese dishes while watching boats drift by. The lively streets are filled with street performers, local shops, and charming corners. It’s the ideal place to soak in Porto’s atmosphere and feel the city’s vibrant energy.

Dom Luís I Bridge

Walk across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Its double-deck iron structure offers stunning views of the Douro River and the colorful riverside neighborhoods. Sunset is the perfect time to capture the city bathed in golden light.

Teleférico de Gaia (Cable Car Ride)

Take a ride on the Teleférico de Gaia for breathtaking panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River. Glide above the historic Ribeira district and the colourful riverside buildings. It’s a peaceful way to see the city from a new perspective. Perfect for photos and capturing unforgettable memories of Porto.

Livraria Lello

Step inside Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Its neo-Gothic architecture and stunning spiral staircase make it a visual masterpiece. Book lovers and Harry Potter fans alike will be enchanted by the magical atmosphere. You need a ticket to enter, but the price is redeemable if you buy a book.

Clérigos Tower & Church

Visit the Clérigos Tower & Church, a striking Baroque landmark in the heart of Porto. Climb the tower’s 225 steps for panoramic views of the city and the Douro River. The ornate church below showcases intricate architecture and historic charm. It’s a must-see spot for history buffs, photographers, and anyone wanting a true taste of Porto’s heritage.

Step into São Bento Railway Station and be amazed by its stunning azulejo tile panels. These intricate blue-and-white tiles depict Portugal’s rich history and culture. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves art, history, and beautiful design.

Palácio da Bolsa

Explore the Palácio da Bolsa, Porto’s 19th-century neoclassical gem. Its lavish interiors, including the famous Arab Room, showcase the city’s wealth and history. Guided tours reveal fascinating stories of commerce, culture, and architecture. A visit here is a step back in time and a true feast for the eyes.

Foz do Douro

Head to Foz do Douro, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy peaceful walks along the promenade, relaxing beaches, and charming seaside cafes. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset and feel the ocean breeze. A calm, scenic escape from the bustling city centre.

Try Porto’s famous Francesinha, a hearty sandwich stacked with meat, cheese, and smothered in a rich, spicy sauce. It’s a true comfort food and a local favorite. Head to spots like Café Santiago or Bufete Fase for an authentic experience. Every bite is indulgent, flavourful, and uniquely Porto.
